Influencing and Communicating the Vision
Creating the vision to be aligned with business goals is a great first step. However it is extremely important to communicate technology vision and strategy to all the stake holders within the organization to gather their feedbacks.
1. CEO, Board and Exec Team(s) : As a Technology leader, you are presenting your technology vision, strategy and roadmaps regularly. It is important to ask what shall take priority, if there are multiple competing priorities. For ex: CEO wants to move from private hosting environment to Cloud. It is important to provide "education" and at the same time understand, what is driving that priority?. Is it driven by increasing margins(or reduce COGS), Is company being preparing to sell itself and trying to upgrade technology?. Is it because, we want to increase revenue by acquisition and so it is driven by M&A strategy. Ot it could be many other things.
2. Product Mgmt Teams: I have worked with both visionary Product strategy teams and Product mgmt teams(who care about quarterly goals and roadmaps). It Product team is strategic, it is easy to get technology strategy items executed through the roadmaps. In either case, it is important to educate the teams to create technology lanes to work on tech-debts and infrastructure upgrades(It is not just about features).
3. Engineering Teams: As engineering teams scale, it is important to identify leaders who can execute on the technology strategy. Help them get proper trainings or update the team skills. It is important to work with engineering to "buy-in" the vision and strategy.
