Creating IP/Patent Strategy
Most engineers and architects I worked with in application development and SaaS, companies spend lot their time with building code and learning new frameworks etc. Also lot of companies don't mentor and encourage engineers to create IP or file patents.
After spending, lot of my early career working in networking and wireless infrastructure companies, I learnt, how important to create and protect IP. Often it helps companies win in long term to fend off competition or increase valuation of the company. Infact, in my last startup, IP/technology/patents(we had filed 13 of them) helped us through raising capital.
So following simple strategies can be taken.
1. Coach and mentor all of engineering/technology teams to start thinking this way. Ideas come from all corners(not just architects).
2. Create incentive to encourage the benefits of filing patents. Then identify and coach those motivated group of folks through the process(Arrange Patent attorneys to hold a simple seminar) .
Personally I have filed for 12 patents(https://patents.justia.com/inventor/parameshwar-hegde). and beefited enormously from it in my career.
3. Coach executives and business/product mgmt peers, with benefits of spending portion of money and time(in the budget) in creating these patents.
Once you go through this process once, you will realize filing patent with USPTO is not a rocket science. You will learn how to file "Provisional" patents to protect your idea and then spend your time/money on perfecting it. Even-though, It is a long process filled with RFIs., in the end it is worth it.
