Keeping up with IOS and Android Releases
Anyone who has developed native apps for a while, understands that Apple and Google has been releasing new major o/s versions every fall and release minor versions after that for bug fixes etc.
If you are are product manager, mobile architect or developer, this means you need to be prepared to support new releases and release version of your own app to make sure, you are not caught off-guard.
There are many ways to address it. Some details may vary between Apple and Google, but they follow similar guidelines.
1. Both Apple and Google organizes major event in May-Hun time frame(Google IO https://events.google.com/io/ and WWDC) in Silicon Valley.
2. They announce major hardware/software updates for phones and other devices.
3. They start releasing Beta versions of SDK and O/S for mobile platforms.
So, least you can do is,
1. Make sure you allocate some time to keep working with Bet versions and make sure, your apps continue to work by keep testing the apps.
2. Pay attention to anything that can break your app and pivot your development roadmap accordingly.
3. Making sure, your app provides ux experiences user will come to expect(Believe me, users are already trained by apple and google...). Your customers will let you know how they feel.
Additionally
1. You can look for opportunities to make use of new tools, UX or SDK features released.
2. Look for opportunities to introduce new features as device and SDK capabilities improve.
3. Watch out for these platform guys providing "same/similar" functionality as you are providing. How many times we have seen, apple and google incorporating features from their app eco-systems into their platform(With new releases, bunch of startups die and bunch are born!! :-)).
